This week is Colorado Severe Weather Week. It’s also National Public Safety Telecommunicators’ week - that’s a big long name for our awesome 911 dispatchers. And it’s National Work Zone Awareness Week. And it’s Child Abuse Prevention Month. In short, there are plenty of themes to explore and use as conversation starters and communication fodder for your agency this month, and every month, really.

Why should you consider jumping on the “weeks” and “months” bandwagon when they coincide with your agency’s work? Because not everything in the field of communication needs to be difficult.

Recognizing staff through these types of national campaigns is a great morale booster. And sharing what your agency does in support of whatever “week” or “month” you want to highlight, is a great way to show residents a good news and more personal side of your agency and its work.

So take a look for these opportunities to showcase your agency and employees. Many times, the organizations behind the “weeks” and “months” even have a media tool kit with themes, drafted boiler-plate releases and social media posts that you can customize for your department.

Not finding anything that fits well with your agency? There’s plenty of other ways to join in the national “day,” “week,” “month” trend by finding some fun days to latch onto.

So in the spirit of helping you fill out your communication content calendar: Happy National Big Wind Day (April 12)!
